The sandstone ruins of the magnificent castle and 130 acres of rediscovered gardens, hidden from public view for over 70 years, have been the subject of one of the largest restoration projects in Europe. The Head Gardener gave a guided tour and explained what the garden used to be like and how they are renovating it. There are acres of woodlands with views of the fells, red squirrels and rhododendrons. Larch Cottage Nursery is one of the top garden nurseries in the UK with over 15,000 varieties of plants, many rare or unusual, sculptures, statuary and garden furniture. www.lowthercastle.orgwww.larchcottage.co.uk

Our evening visit this year included a guided tour by Eddie Harland, the Head Gardener, and full access to the garden.
Durham Botanic Gardens are a delightful place. As part of the University there is science to be seen in the various student research projects. There are wonderful specimen trees, woodland walks, a flower meadow, glasshouses with tropical plants and all sorts of bugs - some very large but all safely in captivity! it is also a great place to wander or to just sit. We had a guided tour with the Head Gardener and finished the evening with refreshments.
Visit to Henrietta Byrne’s garden, 69 Frenchgate DL10 7AE
Members enjoyed a convivial evening and are grateful to Henrietta for inviting us. This is a typical medium-sized Richmond town garden surrounded by a stone wall, thus creating a good climate for plants to grow, especially as it is South West facing. Henrietta has created a pretty garden that provides interest throughout the year.
